Transport for NSW will continue improvement work to Windang Bridge from early next month to ensure the bridge remains safe now and into the future.
The next stage of the project will see additional rock installed under the bridge to provide a stable support without impeding the flow of water through the Lake Illawarra Entrance Channel.
Work started in the February last year and has so far involved extensive repairs to the concrete bridge piers, including patching areas of damaged concrete.
The work was needed to address serious scour, or sand erosion, around the bridge piers as it was threatening the bridge’s structural stability.
Urgent scour protection work was carried out in 2019 and, through continual monitoring of the bridge, further scour was identified along the remaining length of the bridge.
Work will be carried out from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from 8am to 1pm on Saturdays from Monday 3 June and is expected to take about six months to complete, weather permitting. There will be no work on Sundays or public holidays.
