Upturned kayak spotted from Hill 60 Base

A male kayaker has been saved from potential disaster off Port Kembla, by an observant Marine Rescue NSW officer.

According to marine Rescue NSW, Watch Officer Phillip Turner was on duty, at Marine Rescue’s Hill 60 radio tower, when he noticed an upturned kayak on waters off Big Island, which is part of Wollongong’s Five Islands, at about 5.15pm, on Thursday 21 November, 2024.

A multi-agency response was initiated, with Marine Rescue and Wollongong City Council lifeguards involved.
