Broadway superstar and Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo has given audiences the green light to sing along to Wicked while watching it in the cinema.
The topic of singing along in theaters has been buzzing online this week since the musical film’s release on November 20.
During NBC’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcast, host Hoda Kotb asked Erivo if she thought it was appropriate for fans to sing along during the movie.
“I’m OK with it,” Erivo replied. “We’ve been singing it ourselves for so long — it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”
Erivo just gave permission to every Wicked-loving, green-faced, gravity defying superfan who sings in their bedroom to pipe up while sitting among others.
Not just in special singalong sessions — which do exist — but in any screening of the musical film.
While it can be exciting to join in the fun, remember that audience members came to hear the stars of the film, not just anyone’s rendition of “Popular.”
Imagine if this happened during a live stage performance of Wicked? Even the stars might be surprised!
Erivo isn’t alone in supporting in-cinema singing. Earlier this week, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson encouraged fans to sing along in theaters during Moana 2.
“Sing! You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you’re into it. Especially if you love music, that’s the fun part,” he said on the red carpet at the film’s premiere.
We get the sentiment, and it’s lovely. However, to keep the experience enjoyable for everyone, consider enjoying the film and holding space for the lyrics of “Defying Gravity” in your head.
